Our Guide to Different Carpet Fibers and How to Keep Them Fresh

Are you looking for a new carpet but unsure which one is the best for your home? It is a hard decision, but we are here to give you the pros and cons of each one. You spend your hard-earned money on the carpet for your home, and we want to ensure you are in love with your new space. Understanding what type of carpet you have is vital to understanding how to maintain your carpet best. Our team at All Clean ChemDry are the experts when it comes to carpets. These are just a few standard carpets that people purchase.

Nylon:

The most popular type of carpet for people to purchase is the nylon type. The reason nylon is the most common is because of its durability. It is made up of very strong fibers, increasing its longevity. The nylon fiber is sturdy and keeps its original look much longer than most. Although nylon is highly durable, it is known for being not stain-resistant.

Olefin (Polypropylene):

Olefin is the shortened name for the polypropylene carpet. This type of carpet has a wool, natural look. And it is less expensive compared to other carpet types. Not only is it cheaper, but it is the best for fighting stains due to its hydrophobic properties. Olefin is often used in damp basements because of its quick drying and mold restating characteristics. The downside to Olefin is that it does not bounce back like other carpet types. This means the more foot traffic you may have may affect the longevity of your carpet, which is why many people don’t purchase this type of carpet for the main rooms in their homes.

Acrylic:

Acrylic has synthetic properties, but it has declined in popularity recently and isn’t a common carpet type homeowners know about. This carpet type is stain-resistant and not as durable as the other carpets. Acrylic looks like wool carpet but is hypoallergenic and cheaper than wool. The acrylic style is also resilient to water.

Polyester:

Polyester is slightly more durable than other synthetic carpets, such as acrylic, but not as much as nylon. It is budget-friendly and extremely stain-resistant compared to different carpet types. It is known for its softness and being comfortable to walk barefoot on. Some polyester carpets can be made from recycled plastic bottles, which makes them an environmentally friendly choice.

Wool:

Wool carpet is known for its luxurious look and feel and is one of the more expensive carpets. Although this type of carpet is known for its beauty, it is not hypoallergenic. Wool carpets can be made from sheep, alpacas, and rabbits, and because of this, they are the more eco-friendly carpets. The material is pretty stain-resistant and keeps the area warm.

Stain Removal:

The best way to clean most of these spots or stains is to always have a can of ChemDry’s “World Famous Spot Remover” in the home. It’s safe for kids and pets and gentle and effective for removing stains on carpet and upholstery fabrics. If you didn’t have it accessible at the time of the spill, you could try to clean it by using warm water. You can vacuum up excess spots and hard stains such as dried dirt. You never want to rub the stain; instead, you should be blotting the problem area. If the stain remains, add a dish soap drop to the water solution and repeat the process. This type of carpet requires warm water as well. If you have a tough stain, try making a mixture with a cup of dish soap, liquid ammonia, and warm water. We still recommend contacting the professionals for carpet cleaning to prevent damage or further staining on your carpet.
