Water damage can be detrimental to your carpet’s health and aesthetic. If left untreated, the only solution may be to replace the entire carpet. So, don’t let large liquid spills and water leaks ruin your carpets for good by enacting our methods of restoring your waterlogged carpets. At All Clean ChemDry, we offer tips for identifying water damage in your carpets and provide both DIY and professional solutions for restoring them.
Spotting Water Damage on Your Carpets
Potent Musty Smell: Moist and wet carpets illicit mold growth, which can bring a very unpleasant musty smell into your home. Air fresheners are a short-term fix, but until you remove the mold, your carpets and home will still have a terrible odor.
Discoloration: If your carpet’s color starts to fade or discolor to black, white, or dark green, then it has water damage.
Wrinkled Texture: Water damage negatively affects the adhesive that binds your carpets to the flooring. A perfectly installed carpet should be straight with no wrinkles or folds. However, water damage can remove that glue or adhesive from the flooring, causing wrinkles and puckering.
Sogginess: Try pressing down on your carpet. If water is released when you do so, then your carpet is waterlogged.
DIY Carpet Drying Method
- Find the Source – Figure out where the excess water is coming from—a plumbing leak, a spill, or other water leaks. Unfortunately, depending on the cause, your carpet’s water damage may be only one negative effect of a larger problem.
- Remove the Carpet (If Possible) – Your carpet is most likely bound by an adhesive that can be removed. Only remove this if you know the water damage exists in your carpet pad(the adhesive). If that is not possible, skip this step.
- Use a Wet Vacuum – If you have a wet vacuum, use it either on your carpets or under it, depending on the source of the water damage. If you do not have a wet vacuum, they are fairly cheap at your local home appliance store. They effectively suck up all that excess water.
- Use Fans or Dehumidifiers – After using the wet vacuum, place fans or dehumidifiers around the water-damaged areas of your carpets for 48 hours to allow the carpet to dry effectively.
- Sanitize the carpet – You will then need to sanitize your carpet to remove any mold that has built up from the waterlogging. We recommend calling a professional like us at All Clean ChemDry to successfully sanitize your carpet.
Do Not Use Steam Cleaning; Use ChemDry!
Steam carpet cleaning is often a cause of waterlogging or water damage, which is why we recommend using ChemDry. ChemDry is our unique carpet cleaning solution that helps your carpets dry much quicker than steam drying, removing any possibility of water damage. Steam drying sometimes doesn’t dry quickly enough or can ruin your carpet’s adhesive by allowing water to seep under your carpet, causing water damage. Make sure to call All Clean ChemDry to clean your carpets without the risk of water damage and mold growth!
