If you live with pets, kids, or have a high-traffic home, you may start to notice dingy or musty smells arise from your carpets. But fear not, you have the power to clear many of those unpleasant odors yourself, and you likely have the necessary tools and ingredients right in your home.
Baking Soda (with or without added scent)
Sprinkle banking soda over your dry carpet and let set for 15 to 20 minutes for a quick refresh, or let it embed into the fibers overnight for a deeper odor extraction. Then vacuum up every bit of the baking soda to rid your carpets of obtrusive smells that are distracting you from day-to-day living. You may even want to add a few drops of essential oils to leave another inviting aroma in your living spaces.
Vinegar
A diluted vinegar solution could be just the trick to address mildew, mold, or fungal-related smells. To treat your carpet, mix white or apple cider vinegar with warm water in a ratio of one part vinegar to two parts water. Let air dry and enjoy the freshness.
Vodka
Vodka is an excellent stain and odor remover. Use it in place of peroxide or soda water to spot-treat spills or pet accidents on your carpet. Simply spray or blot the spot-affected areas with vodka and let it sit, then blot dry. No expensive vodka is necessary!
Buy the Enzyme Cleaner
You may already use an enzyme cleaner for pet stains, but if not, head over to your grocer or pet shop and you can easily find a carpet cleaner to aid in deodorizing your carpets. These cleaners are best at purging those harder-to-remove smells and stains such as feces, soaked urine, blood, or vomit.
Vacuum often
You may find the vacuuming daunting, but it is necessary to keep your home smelling fresher by removing the particulates and spills before they accumulate or set into the carpet. The more often, the better chances you will keep the unpleasant odors at bay.
If all else fails, give All Clean ChemDry a call and we can help get your carpets back up to par.
