Don’t Spill That On Your Carpet!

An accidental spill on your carpet is almost inevitable and there are certain stains that are harder to remove than others. Some stains can be near impossible to get out, but there are ways to remedy or at least find a professional to get the damage reversed as much as possible without replacing your carpet.

Red Wine

To treat a stain, you should first gently blot the area with a dry washcloth. Work your way from the outside of the stain to the inside – rinse with a cloth using clean water and continue to blot. Be gentle as you clean because scrubbing the stain can cause damage to the rug or carpet or the pad underneath.

Chocolate

Surprised to see this on the list? Many people do not realize that chocolate stains are hard to remove, especially once they’ve melted into the carpet. Clean the chocolate out as soon as possible using a cloth with cold water and a bit of dishwasher detergent.

Nail Polish

You really should avoid painting your nails directly over the carpet. Be proactive and use a mat or towel (that you don’t care about ruining) while painting or removing nail polish from your nails. Call a professional!

Blood

A blood spill means more than just a stain, as some type of injury likely occurred. First things first, get the blood spiller medical attention, if necessary. Once everyone is okay, then it’s time to tend to the stain left behind. You will need an enzyme laundry detergent with water to remove the blood from your carpet.

Bleach

Bleach is actually an amazing stain removing agent. However, if you spill bleach on your carpet (and it’s not pure white), you will be creating a discoloration of your own. If this does occur, there may be nothing that can be done aside from calling in a professional carpet cleaning service. Remember to store your bleach in a secure location with tile flooring.

Beer

Beer spills require an experienced carpet technician, just to get the odor removed. You will likely be able to remove the stain yourself, however the smell will require a little help from the experts.

Coffee

Coffee is a staple in most homes, so a spill can happen anytime. Although it is mostly made up of water, it can cause permanent and immediate damage to your carpet. A professional will likely need to be called in.

Tomato

The red in many spills is always tough to get out. However, the best way to minimize the damage is to address it as soon as possible. Use a paper towel to blot and a gentle, natural carpet cleaner. You can get most of it out using this method, but you may need to call in a carpet cleaning specialist!
